Board-Level Tester

Board-Level Testers (BLTs) are essential tools in modern electronics manufacturing, designed to verify the electrical and functional integrity of fully assembled Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) during the production process. BLTs ensure that PCBs meet design specifications before they leave the production line, thus playing a vital role in reducing defects, improving yield, and maintaining consistent quality.

As electronic devices continue to shrink in size and grow in complexity, BLTs become an increasingly important part of the manufacturing process. These devices help to identify faults early, reducing the chances of downstream failures and ensuring that only high-quality products reach customers.

Key Functions and Testing Methods

BLTs are equipped with a wide range of testing capabilities, designed to ensure that every component and function of the board meets the necessary specifications. Some of the most common tests performed by BLTs include:

In-Circuit Testing (ICT)

In-circuit testing checks individual components on the PCB, such as resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits (ICs), and connectors. The goal is to verify the correct placement, values, and soldering of each component. Any incorrect connections, missing components, or soldering issues can be identified and addressed early in the process. This testing ensures that every part of the board functions as expected before it moves to the next production stage.

Functional Testing (FCT)

Functional testing evaluates the board as a complete system, simulating real-world operating conditions to verify that the board performs according to its design specifications. This test typically checks the operation of all electrical functions, ensuring that the board performs as intended in its final application. Functional tests can simulate the conditions that the board will experience in its operational environment, helping to uncover issues that may not be visible during in-circuit testing alone.

Boundary Scan Testing

Boundary scan testing is often used for boards with a high density of components, where traditional in-circuit testing may be challenging. This test involves checking the interconnections between chips, ensuring that signals flow correctly through the system. Boundary scan testing is particularly useful for detecting issues in multi-layer PCBs or when accessing certain parts of the board with traditional probes is not feasible.

BLTs come in a variety of designs, ranging from simple benchtop setups for low-volume production to high-throughput automated systems integrated into large-scale assembly lines. The versatility of BLT systems allows them to be tailored to specific PCB designs and production volumes, making them suitable for a wide range of industries and applications.

  • Benchtop Testers: Ideal for small-scale and prototype testing, where testing needs to be flexible, and quick changes are necessary.

  • Automated Test Systems: For larger production runs, BLTs can be integrated into automated assembly lines, ensuring high-speed testing and optimized throughput.

These systems are often customized with test fixtures, probe heads, or bed-of-nails interfaces to contact specific test points on the PCB, ensuring thorough testing across various components.

Benefits of Using BLTs in RET Manufacturing

1. Early Detection of Defects: By identifying issues such as solder bridges, open circuits, missing components, or incorrect firmware, BLTs help manufacturers identify and address problems before they affect downstream processes or reach the end customer.

2. Increased Efficiency and Reduced Costs: Automated testing reduces the need for manual inspection, speeds up production, and helps to lower labor costs.

3. Enhanced Quality Control: BLTs provide manufacturers with a consistent and reliable testing process, ensuring that every product meets the required standards before it reaches the market.

4. Regulatory Compliance: Meeting IEC 60068 and EN 300 standards, BLTs help manufacturers comply with environmental and safety regulations, ensuring the safety and reliability of the products.

The Growing Need for BLTs in Modern Manufacturing

As electronic devices become smaller, more compact, and more complex, the role of Board-Level Testers (BLTs) is becoming increasingly critical in ensuring quality and optimizing production efficiency. With more advanced and intricate designs, traditional testing methods are no longer sufficient. BLTs provide precise, automated, and comprehensive testing solutions that guarantee all components are functioning as intended, significantly improving the quality and reliability of finished products.

In an increasingly competitive market, investing in BLT systems ensures that manufacturers maintain a high level of quality control, meet regulatory standards, and reduce costly failures or product recalls.

Versatility and Scalability of BLTs

Features of Our Board-Level Tester for RET

Our Board-Level Tester (BLT) for Remote Electrical Tilting (RET) applications incorporates several advanced features to enhance the testing process and meet the specific needs of the RET industry.

Compact Design

We have engineered the BLT with an efficient and compact design that measures only 30×22 cm². This small size makes the BLT perfect for use in production environments, where space is often limited. Despite its size, the BLT delivers powerful and reliable testing capabilities. Its compact design also allows users to employ multiple units simultaneously, accelerating the testing process for high-volume production.

Adapter-Based Design

With multiple RET PCBs requiring testing, we chose to utilize adapter-based design to offer a cost-effective and efficient solution. We’ve developed three different adapters specifically for testing various RET PCBs. This allows for the testing of multiple PCB types with a single BLT system, reducing the need for multiple testers and saving on both equipment costs and floor space.

Single Actuator Design

Some RET boards require multiple motor drivers to operate. To simplify testing, our BLT system is designed to support up to six drivers using a single actuator. This innovative approach allows the BLT to test boards with multiple drivers without the added complexity of additional actuators. The single actuator design not only reduces the size and weight of the system but also lowers the overall cost, making it more accessible for smaller manufacturers and ensuring efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the testing process.

Self-Test Functionality

Our BLT comes equipped with an optional Tester Adapter, which allows users to verify the system’s functionality and ensure accurate measurements. The self-test function includes checks for various system components, such as the Motor, External ADC, Internal ADC, Regulators, Relays, and RS-485 drivers. This ensures that the BLT is working correctly and can perform tests to the highest standards, providing manufacturers with confidence in the results.

User-Friendly Software

The dedicated operating software of the BLT integrates seamlessly with the hardware, offering easy-to-use controls for test procedures and reports. The software is built using the latest technology, ensuring that users can access advanced features without the complexity often associated with testing systems. The user interface is designed for ease of use, allowing operators to quickly set up tests, view real-time results, and generate reports with minimal training.
